Hundreds without power in downtown Toronto for more than a day as crews work to repair damaged cable

Power Outage in Downtown Toronto Affects Hundreds

More than 600 customers in the Moss Park and Old Town neighborhoods of downtown Toronto remain without electricity, over 27 hours after a power outage began due to a faulty cable.

Affected Area

The outage zone extends from just east of Parliament Street to just west of Jarvis Street, and from Queen Street East down to south of Front Street East, according to Toronto Hydro’s power outage map.

Repair Efforts

Crews arrived at the scene shortly after the outage started just after 8 a.m. Wednesday. Working through the night, Toronto Hydro reported “significant progress” and that repairs were “nearing completion” by Thursday morning.

However, the estimated restoration time was delayed again to 11 a.m., roughly 27 hours after the outage began.

Cause of the Outage

“The outage was caused by a cable fault damaged by a third-party dig-in at an active construction site in the area,” Toronto Hydro said in an update around 4:30 p.m.
