LA Mayor Lifts Emergency Declaration on Homelessness

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has lifted the local emergency declaration on homelessness, citing progress in reducing homelessness, including a 17% drop in street homelessness over two years.

Mayor Bass stated that while the crisis persists, the city now has the necessary tools to continue urgent action without the temporary order.

"Therefore, with the city firmly pointed in a new direction on homelessness, I am lifting the official declaration of a state of emergency."

In a memo to the City Council, Mayor Bass noted that she would reinstate the declaration if "extraordinary authority" is needed to maintain or accelerate progress on homelessness.

This decision comes as council members have discussed phasing out the emergency declaration.
