A Rhinoceros in the Arctic

Scientists have discovered a new extinct species of rhinoceros in Devon Island, Nunavut, providing insights into mammal evolution.

A new study reveals that rhinos once inhabited the Arctic, with the newly identified species traveling farther north than any known rhino before.

According to lead author Danielle Fraser, head of palaeobiology at the Canadian Museum of Nature,

there are only five species of rhinos in Africa and Asia today, but in the past, they were also found in Europe and North America.

The discovery is based on fossils found on Devon Island, which include the transitional seal Puijila darwini and other plants and animals.
