Luke Macmichael, a 46-year-old father of six from Sault Ste. Marie, has chosen a different path in life. He earns a modest salary in technical support at Algoma Steel, but saves half of it.
He drives a Toyota Corolla, which he describes as "the cheapest car on the lot." By his estimates, he could have retired over a decade ago, following the principles of the FIRE movement - financial independence, retire early.
"I more or less feel like I've been retired since I was 35,"
Macmichael says, explaining that this sense of freedom came from decades of discipline. He doesn't see frugality as a sacrifice, but rather as a choice that allows him to work without needing the money.
Author's summary: Luke Macmichael achieved financial independence at 35.
