Trump and Xi Make Progress but the Work Is Far from Over

President Donald Trump concluded his first Asia trip of his term with a high-stakes meeting with Xi Jinping.

The meeting did not end in a grand bargain, but was not inconsequential. Trump expressed satisfaction with the summit, stating

"Overall, I guess on the scale of from zero to 10, with 10 being the best, I would say the meeting was a 12"
on his way home.

A key issue, Taiwan, was not discussed, according to Trump, who said

"Taiwan never came up"
with Xi. Other moves made by Trump reduced the attractiveness of military options for Xi.

Author's summary: Trump and Xi made progress in their meeting.
