Google Revives Nuclear Power Plant

Google is collaborating with NextEra to reopen the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa, aiming to power its data centers.

The nuclear power plant, which was closed in 2020 due to damage from a summer derecho, is expected to be recommissioned with a capacity to generate 601 megawatts of electricity, plus an additional 14 megawatts.

Neither company disclosed financial terms of the deal.

Google has been expanding its zero-carbon energy sources to power its growing data center fleet, and this partnership with NextEra marks a significant step towards achieving this goal.
