A former Williamsport Area High School teacher claims that strapping a special needs student to a backboard was a class exercise, not a disciplinary action.
The incident occurred in a homeland security class, where the teacher, Caschera III, had students secure the boy, identified as N.W., to a backboard and turn it vertical.
The student had to feign a cough to be released.
The school district and defendants have asked for the dismissal of a federal lawsuit related to the incident, which occurred three weeks after Caschera was hired as a full-time teacher.
The plaintiffs, Page Carol and Nathaniel Woods Jr., allege that Caschera directed the restraint because he thought their son was sleeping through a test, which Caschera disputes.
