Fayette Central School Building Independence Through Social-Emotional Learning

Principal Courtney Lyons explained to directors how Fayette Central School's social-emotional learning program helps students become more self-aware, empathetic, and independent.

According to Principal and Superintendent Courtney Lyons, helping students build confidence, empathy, and independence is key to Fayette Central School's approach to social and emotional learning.

"We have a staff member that comes in once a week and works with all students in the building,"

she said.

"The idea is for students to be working on skills they don’t necessarily get through academic work."

Lyons told the school board on Oct. 2 that the state has not yet created its own social and emotional learning curriculum, but encourages schools to adapt materials used in other states and take advantage of the many online resources available.
