Since March, bears have attacked over 100 people in Japan, with seven fatalities confirmed by the Ministry of the Environment, the highest number on record since 2006.
Conservationists attribute the increasing encounters between bears and humans to multiple factors, including a decline in acorn populations due to climate change, forcing bears to roam closer to towns in search of food.
Given the country’s ongoing ecological and demographic issues, however, it may be more accurate to say that the bears are facing an unprecedented human problem.
