Governments and policy makers need to pay more attention to hydropower as a major source of low-emission flexible power generation, according to Fatih Birol, the executive director of the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Birol emphasized the importance of hydropower in a LinkedIn post, calling for a greater role for this clean energy source in global electricity systems. Currently, hydropower accounts for about 14% of the total global electricity supply.
