Ministry Plans to Allow Wolf Hunting

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah (CD) announced plans to permit wolf hunting starting January 1st.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry aims to allow the hunting of at least 65 wolves this winter, with a target wolf population of 273 for a favourable conservation status, significantly lower than the current population of about 430.

According to a report by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), the number of wolves in Finland has increased dramatically, especially in the west and southwest.

The Finnish wolf population is at a favourable conservation level through most of the country, up to Fell Lapland.
