Pre-construction work for the PCB landfill in Lee has commenced, with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) opting to skip the formal comment period.
A timeline released by the EPA last week indicates that site clearance work is set to begin on November 3 and continue through January. The site, located south of Woods Pond in Lee, is near a gravel quarry and has sparse vegetation.
The EPA hopes to begin clearing the site after November.
The planned Upland Disposal Facility will hold sediments contaminated with lower levels of PCBs. According to the EPA, the completed landfill will have a height of 1,099 feet above sea level, 2 feet higher than the top power line.
General Electric Co. has submitted a site preparation plan, preparing the site for the upcoming heavy construction work.
