Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has warned of Russia's increasing use of in absentia convictions against exiled Russian journalists and foreign media professionals.
This tactic is used to intimidate journalists, prevent their return to Russia, and pressure their relatives. According to data from RSF and the Justice for Journalists Foundation (JFJ), nearly 70 journalists have been targeted over 44 months.
Our goal: to leave no breach of freedom of information unreported.
RSF and JFJ have cross-checked data to track these cases, which have become commonplace since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Author's summary: Russia targets exiled journalists with in absentia convictions.
