Chilling Photo of a Hyena Prowling in a Ghost Town Wins ‘Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2025’

The town of Kolmanskop, a ghost of its former self from the early 1900s, is where photographer Wim Van den Heever captured a haunting image.

For years, Van den Heever noticed brown hyena tracks and droppings in the South African ghost town, making it a dream to capture these predators on camera.

“It took me 10 years to finally get this one single image of a brown hyena, in the most perfect frame imaginable,”

he said in an interview with the Natural History Museum (NHM), which organized the 2025 Wildlife Photographer of the Year award.

Author's summary: Hyena wins Wildlife Photographer award.
