As the government shutdown extends to almost two weeks, state agencies in Utah are not expecting immediate impacts on federally funded nutrition programs this month.
However, food access advocates are worried that an overhaul to food programs scheduled to start in November may result in scarcer resources for those in need.
The state had already secured October’s funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, according to the Utah Department of Workforce Services.
The Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, known as WIC, is also funded for the month, and the state is still processing applications for both.
