Violent crime on the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has risen to its second-highest level in the past decade, with 2,893 crimes reported at CTA stations and platforms between August and July.
The arrest rate for these crimes has dropped, with fewer than 1-in-5 violent CTA crimes leading to an arrest, compared to a little over 1-in-4 for all transit crimes.
Federal funding for the CTA is in jeopardy due to the increase in violent crime, with authorities threatening to cut funding unless public safety improves. This comes as the CTA plans a fare hike of 25 cents per ride and state lawmakers consider a bailout of the system.
