Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes is giving House Speaker Mike Johnson an ultimatum: schedule Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva's swearing-in ceremony within two days or face a lawsuit.
Grijalva was elected to represent Arizona's 7th Congressional District three weeks ago but has yet to be sworn in. Mayes sent a letter to Johnson's office on Tuesday, threatening litigation if the ceremony is not scheduled by Thursday, before the end of the federal government shutdown.
Mayes announced the letter during the official canvas of the Sept. 23 special election results.
The ceremony is a necessary step in the election process, and Mayes is taking action to ensure it takes place. Arizona Gov. was present during the official canvas on Tuesday morning.
