A backyard flock in Mississippi County has tested positive for highly pathogenic bird flu, prompting officials to stress biosecurity as new outbreaks continue to affect flocks nationwide.
A backyard poultry flock in Mississippi County has tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, according to Mississippi County extension agent Allen Beach.
“We have had a positive backyard flock detected in Mississippi County. It happens every year, but it is important that Biosecurity protocols be practiced.
The case, confirmed in October, involved a flock of approximately 60 birds, which has since been depopulated. Since the initial detection of HPAI in the United States in February 2022, the disease has affected more than 181 million birds across 1,761 flocks nationwide, including both commercial and backyard operations.
