During the New York Islanders' home opener, Matthew Schaefer scored his first NHL goal. The 18-year-old defenseman achieved this milestone in the third period against the Washington Capitals.
The Islanders were down 4-1 when they went to the power play at 16:41 of the third period. After a scramble, the loose puck went to Schaefer, who scored, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery challenged the goal for a hand pass, but it stood after a review. This goal added to Schaefer's early accomplishments, including his first assist and point in the Islanders' first game of the season against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The goal stood after a lengthy review, much to the delight of a roaring UBS Arena.
