A new law has been signed by Gavin Newsom to expand the eligibility for CARE Court, a mental health program aimed at bringing more people with severe mental illness into treatment.
Initially, the program had a limited reach, helping fewer people than projected, but the new law will now include people who experience psychotic symptoms due to bipolar disorder, in addition to those with schizophrenia and other limited psychotic disorders.
“California doesn’t sit on the sidelines while people fall through the cracks,”
said Newsom in a written statement, emphasizing the importance of this expansion in his administration's efforts to provide treatment to those with serious mental illness.
The expansion of CARE Court may help more people, despite ongoing questions about its effectiveness.
