During a Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee hearing, Senator Jacky Rosen accused Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of stalking her staff. The exchange occurred as the committee reviewed a set of President Donald Trump’s nominees.
Moreno, who previously owned car dealerships, admitted that he collected the vehicle identification numbers (VINs) of his Democratic colleagues’ cars. He claimed this was done to highlight their hypocrisy regarding automobile safety regulations.
“Would it surprise you that I got the VIN numbers of every one of my Democrat colleagues’ vehicles and found that none of them bought any of the additional safety technologies on their cars?” Moreno asked.
He argued that while some politicians demand higher safety standards for the public, they do not personally invest in those same technologies. Rosen viewed his actions as an invasion of privacy and labeled them as stalking.
The tense discussion quickly shifted to a broader debate about privacy concerns and which political party bears responsibility for the ongoing government shutdown, now in its 36th day — the longest in U.S. history.
