Strong weather conditions are affecting B.C.’s South Coast and Lower Mainland on Thursday morning with overlapping warnings in place.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a rainfall warning for parts of Metro Vancouver, including the North Shore, Coquitlam, and Maple Ridge, as well as Howe Sound.
“An additional 20 to 40 mm of rainfall can be expected before the rain eases off later this evening,” said the ECCC.
Michael Kuss, Meteorologist at 1130 NewsRadio, noted the rain will likely be heaviest during the afternoon commute.
Expect water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas, which may significantly impact rush hour traffic. Local utility outages are also possible.
A wind warning has been issued for Richmond, Delta, the Sunshine Coast, and much of eastern Vancouver Island.
Winds may reach speeds of 70 to 90 kilometres per hour, the ECCC warned.
The winds are expected to ease by evening, but residents are advised to secure loose objects to avoid damage.
Severe wind and rain warnings are impacting B.C.’s South Coast with strong afternoon rainfall and high winds, prompting safety precautions and travel disruptions.
