Kevin Lankinen is set to start his second consecutive game for the Vancouver Canucks tonight against the Colorado Avalanche at Rogers Arena. Meanwhile, Thatcher Demko remains a strong candidate to play against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.
Lankinen is confirmed for tonight’s game, with recalled backup Jiri Patera supporting him against the Avalanche’s powerful offense. Last season, Lankinen handled back-to-back starts, including a 23-save effort in a 4-2 home loss to the Montreal Canadiens on March 11, followed by a 20-save win the very next night in Calgary.
He will face a tough challenge from Avalanche stars Nathan MacKinnon and Martin Necas, who together have 21 goals and 42 points this season. The Avalanche currently hold a 9-1-5 record and just dominated the Edmonton Oilers 9-1 in their last game.
Demko skated Sunday morning and is being rested carefully due to the demanding stretch ahead. Head coach Adam Foote indicated Demko looks good and is likely to start Tuesday against the Jets, though he joked about potential media reaction if plans change.
“Thatcher felt good, he had a good day. For me, it looks like he will (play) Tuesday, and I’ll deal with it later when you guys get mad at me if he doesn’t.”
Lankinen was unaware on Saturday night that he would be making another start, after earning a 29-save win over the Columbus Blue Jackets with a 4-3 victory.
The Canucks rely on Lankinen for back-to-back starts, while Demko is being carefully managed to keep him fresh for a demanding upcoming schedule, including games against the Jets and a challenging road trip.
Kevin Lankinen starts again tonight facing a strong Avalanche offense, while Thatcher Demko is being rested with hopes to play Tuesday against the Jets in preparation for a tough stretch ahead.
