How 'I Love LA' Star Josh Hutcherson Set His Boyfriend Character Apart: Didn't Want to 'Just Be the Square'

Josh Hutcherson on Shaping His Character in “I Love LA”

Josh Hutcherson joined Rachel Sennott’s HBO comedy “I Love LA” late in production, stepping into a role initially played by Miles Robbins after the pilot had already been filmed. Despite coming in during a recast, Hutcherson still had room to shape his on-screen persona alongside Sennott and co-showrunner Emma Barrie.

“We very quickly all got on the same page, which was we didn’t want Dylan to just be the square, the boring, nothing guy,” Hutcherson told TheWrap. “We wanted to find some textures to him that felt funny and dynamic and different, rather than something that we’ve seen before.”

The team worked together to redefine Dylan — the long-term, live-in partner of Sennott’s character, Maia — by delving into his motivations and relationship dynamics. Hutcherson noted that this collaborative process helped expand the character beyond what was written in the script, making him more complex and authentic.
