The new Toyota Hilux has officially been unveiled, continuing on the outgoing platform but featuring updated styling, a refreshed interior, and a new electric vehicle (EV) option. This 9th-generation bakkie launched in Thailand comes about 10 years after the previous model was introduced.
The Hilux holds special importance in South Africa, where it first arrived in 1969 and has been the country's top-selling vehicle for over 50 years. It is also manufactured locally at Toyota SA Motors’ Prospecton plant in KwaZulu-Natal.
The 9th-gen Hilux retains the outgoing model’s IMV platform with improvements such as new hydraulic engine mounts and shear-type cabin mounts designed to reduce vibrations and improve ride comfort. Some exterior panels like the doors and roof seem to be carried over, as well as the load bay.
The overall dimensions, including the wheelbase, appear to be mostly unchanged from the previous generation.
The most noticeable design update is at the front, where most trims feature a new honeycomb-style grille inspired by the Corolla Cross and sharper headlamp shapes.
“The 9th-gen Hilux gains new hydraulic engine mounts and shear-type cabin mounts to reduce vibrations and enhance ride comfort.”
The new Hilux blends tradition with modern updates, maintaining its proven qualities while introducing contemporary design and an EV variant.
