Hollywood is often said to have stopped producing true movie stars. So when Glen Powell, known for his square jaw and undeniable charisma, was cast to reprise Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic role in the reboot of The Running Man, it sparked excitement.
However, Powell, a polite Texan who left the Los Angeles scene to return home to Austin as his fame increased, remains grounded. He told AFP,
“I don't find myself to be exceptional.”
On the difference between modern stars and those from the past, he said,
“That era of action stars and movie stars? You can't really compare apples to oranges.”
Powell’s character, Ben Richards, differs greatly from the invincible heroes of Schwarzenegger, Stallone, or Mel Gibson. Those 20th-century figures were tough soldiers, cops, or fighters with special abilities.
In contrast, Ben Richards is an everyman with no extraordinary skills except rugged toughness and a quick temper. He is forced to participate in a lethal game show where the world aims to kill him. His goal is to survive, win prize money, and afford medicine to save his daughter’s life.
Powell shared his connection to the role:
“I've always identified myself as an underdog. Some of my favorite movies are ordinary people against extraordinary odds. And you don't get more ordinary than Ben.”
Author's summary: Glen Powell brings a relatable everyman to 'The Running Man,' redefining the action hero as an underdog facing deadly challenges with grit and heart.
