Postal Workers Strike Raises Awareness of Rural Post Office Closures

Babe Seguin, president of Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) local chapter 738, told Energeticcity.ca that postal workers in the Peace region have been striking since September to highlight the threat of rural post office closures.

Initially conducting daily job actions, the union has now transitioned to rotating strikes without lessening the impact of their message.

These locations were previously protected by a moratorium, which may be lifted due to proposed postal service cutbacks.

Canada Post’s Response

Canada Post’s media department explained that Minister Lightbound has been given 45 days to present a plan addressing a series of measures introduced by the federal government in early September.

"It involves prioritizing service, proceeding thoughtfully so the impact on the public is minimized, treating employees with respect, keeping the public informed, and being flexible in adjusting to the 'revolving needs' of the Canadian public with the postal service."

Union President’s Statement

"The move from daily job action shifting to rotating strikes hasn’t dimmed Peace region postal workers’ message."

The ongoing strike aims to increase public awareness and pressure decision-makers regarding the future of rural post offices.
