Union Nears Controversial Deal Amid Workforce Cuts

Multiple media outlets report that the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is close to finalizing an agreement with Canada Post that would impose severe cuts to jobs and working conditions. Negotiations restarted on Monday, November 3, when CUPW issued a statement acknowledging the role of a government-appointed mediator and expressing willingness to resolve differences and “secure ratifiable collective agreements at the bargaining table.”

Union Appeal to Government

In a separate statement, CUPW requested that the Liberal government, which supports plans to reduce the workforce by two-thirds out of 55,000 employees, “ensure that any decisions… are made… with Union input.”

"The union bureaucracy is ready to overcome disagreements and secure ratifiable agreements."
