"Past Lives" by Jay Som ft. Hayley Williams - Northern Transmissions
Jay Som is the musical project of Melina Duterte, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. She will release her new album Belong on November 7. Ahead of the album launch, Jay Som shared the track "Past Lives," featuring Hayley Williams from Paramore.
The two artists met in Nashville to collaborate on the song alongside Steph Marziano. Williams’ gentle harmonies on the sweeping "Past Lives" enhance the track’s melancholy mood, capturing the feeling of drifting through moments of stagnation and fleeting momentum.
The song is a powerful composition, with a slowed-down middle section that feels like an internal struggle.
“It’s a dream come true to have Hayley sing on my first feature on an album before the recording of ‘Float,’ I still can’t believe it happened,” Duterte shared about the collaboration.
“She’s one of the kindest artists out there and she graciously accepts and uplifts the people around her. We’re all so lucky to witness her talent and live on the same timeline as her.”
The album Belong features contributions from Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (Mk.gee, Illuminati Hotties), Steph Marziano (producer for Vundabar, Hot Wax, Sir Chloe), and Kyle Pulley. Notably, Jay Som welcomes guest vocalists for the first time on this record.
