Eastern Illinois University ping-pong club established by freshmen

Eastern Illinois University Ping-Pong Club Founded by Freshmen

The rhythmic sound of ping-pong balls has frequently filled the campus of Eastern Illinois University, yet there was no official student group dedicated to the sport — until recently. Freshman psychology major Max Holzer, who first played ping-pong in middle school and continued in college, was surprised by the game's popularity on campus despite poor equipment and lack of dedicated space.

Determined to improve conditions, Holzer teamed up with fellow freshman and environmental biology major Nolan Anderson to create a registered student organization (RSO) focused on ping-pong. Their goal was to enhance the quality of play and unite both seasoned players and newcomers interested in learning.

“We had the equipment, but there was a lack of ping-pong influence in the school,” said Holzer, who serves as the club’s president. “I saw a lot of people playing, so I thought, ‘You know what, why shouldn’t there be an official RSO for people who want to play ping pong?’”

On October 15, Holzer and Anderson presented their proposal to the Student Senate, which gave unanimous approval for the club’s formation. Since then, the ping-pong club has held three weekly meetings in the basement of Andrews Hall every Tuesday at 6 p.m.
