Latvia to Sign Artemis Accords

Latvia has agreed to join the Artemis Accords, a framework that establishes norms of behavior for responsible and safe space exploration. With this step, Latvia aligns with a coalition of 60 nations dedicated to developing cooperative and transparent space practices.

According to a statement published on a Latvian government platform, the decision was formally approved by the country’s Cabinet of Ministers on October 7. The announcement emphasized Latvia’s aim to strengthen its international standing in the space sector.

“Latvia’s accession to the Artemis Accords is a significant step toward our more active participation in the global space community. We are proud to become part of a group of nations committed to exploring and using space responsibly and sustainably,” said Dace Melbārde, Latvia’s minister for education and science.

The Artemis Accords, marking their fifth anniversary, expand on the principles of the Outer Space Treaty and related global agreements. They outline practical standards on interoperability, transparency, resource use, and the prevention of harmful interference in space activities.
