Why Iraq's Election Is Iran's Last, Best Hedge

Iran’s recent difficulties in Syria and growing pressure on Hezbollah in Lebanon have turned Iraq into the most critical battleground for Tehran. The upcoming parliamentary election on November 11 will determine whether Iran can maintain its influence through allied groups or face a fragmented political landscape that limits its regional ambitions.

As Tehran’s influence weakens across the Middle East, Iraq remains the essential arena for preserving its strategic depth, financial channels, and deterrence network. The vote could mark a turning point for how Iran projects power through its network of proxies.

“The parliamentary election could indeed be consequential for Iran, because if its preferred candidates fare poorly, it's just another thing that goes wrong for Tehran, and could lead to a cascading effect where Iranian power is viewed as significantly diminished,” said Colin Clarke, executive director of the Soufan Center.
“If Iran fails to get its desired result, it would damage Tehran's brand across the region as it makes the leaders look weak,” Clarke added.
