Recent polling shows Democratic candidates surpassing Republican incumbent Representative Tom Barrett in a Michigan district that includes Lansing, the state capital. The area previously voted for President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
The results follow a strong showing for Democrats in national elections held Tuesday, marked by victories in New York’s mayoral race, as well as gubernatorial contests in Virginia and New Jersey. Democrats also made progress in California’s redistricting plans.
Michigan remains a key political battleground. Of its 13 representatives in the U.S. House, seven are Republicans and six are Democrats. Both of Michigan’s senators are Democrats. Nationally, Republicans currently maintain a narrow 219–213 majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, making contests like Michigan’s 7th district crucial for determining control of Congress.
“The state’s 7th congressional district encompasses around 700,000 residents and voted for Trump last year.”
Barrett, who took office after his 2024 victory, now faces growing competition as Democrats work to reclaim congressional influence. Their broader goal is to strengthen their position in Congress ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, counterbalancing President Trump’s ongoing term.
