Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein recently arrived on Netflix, but its casting almost looked very different. Initially, Andrew Garfield was set to play The Creature, Victor Frankenstein's monstrous creation.
Garfield had to leave the project in early January 2024 due to scheduling conflicts caused by the 2023 Hollywood strikes. This opened the door for Jacob Elordi to take over the role at the last moment.
The change forced del Toro and make-up artist Mike Hill to rethink The Creature's design under extreme time pressure. Originally, they had spent nine months crafting Garfield’s look, but with Elordi, they had only nine weeks to adapt it.
"You can't be under more pressure than that," del Toro told Vanity Fair.
Despite the rush, the recast turned out well. It's hard to imagine anyone else portraying The Creature now. This doesn't detract from Garfield’s potential, but Elordi's performance strengthens the movie's core themes.
The last-minute casting of Jacob Elordi, replacing Andrew Garfield, brought fresh energy and helped deliver a compelling interpretation of Frankenstein.
