Georgia Southern secured its first road victory of the season Thursday night, edging Appalachian State 25-23 in their heated “Deeper Than Hate” rivalry matchup.
Quarterback JC French IV delivered a standout performance, throwing for 352 yards—his season best—and adding two touchdowns. One came through the air, and the other on a ground play in the second half.
“The O-line did an amazing job today protecting me and the receivers making plays. I probably could have had 450 if I just put it on the money.”
Running back OJ Arnold contributed 105 rushing yards, including several key late-game runs that sealed the win for the Eagles.
The Georgia Southern defense faced a strong opponent in Rashod Dubinion, the Sun Belt’s leading rusher. They contained him effectively, holding him to just 40 yards on 12 carries and limiting App State’s total rushing output to 77 yards—their best defensive showing of the season.
Freshman kicker Tripp Bryant proved decisive, converting four of five field goals from distances of 21, 26, 23, and 24 yards. His final make early in the fourth quarter extended Georgia Southern’s lead to 25-16, a margin that held despite late pressure from the Mountaineers.
The young kicker’s composure and accuracy in challenging conditions were key to the team’s success on a cold night away from home.
With this win, Georgia Southern improves to 4-5 and moves within two victories of bowl eligibility.
Summary: Georgia Southern earned a gritty 25-23 road win over App State, powered by JC French IV’s 352-yard game, OJ Arnold’s crucial runs, and Tripp Bryant’s four field goals.
