Simu Liu Calls ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ a “Love Letter to the Entire Genre of Superhero Movies”

Simu Liu will once again portray Shang-Chi in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, set for release in December 2026. In a recent interview, Liu discussed the project and shared what fans can expect from the new Marvel ensemble directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.

“There are just so many actors in it, and getting to work with those people as peers is really incredible because I grew up watching so many of them,” Liu said.

The actor will star alongside Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Vanessa Kirby as Susan Storm, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, and Florence Pugh as Yelena, among others. Liu emphasized the scale of the collaboration and the sense of community among the cast.

“It feels, in a lot of ways, like a love letter to the entire genre of superhero movies. And I think there’s something really fun about that.”

He added that the movie is meant for “all the misfits and weirdos and underdogs who grew up reading comic books,” explaining that superhero stories have always offered hope and belonging to those who felt different.

Avengers: Doomsday is being directed by the Russo brothers, with a script written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. The film is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.
