Scott Buchholz, Opposition Skills and Training Spokesman, emphasized that Sussan Ley’s "feminine politeness" should not be confused with weakness. He contrasted Ley's leadership style with that of her predecessor, Peter Dutton, describing Dutton’s approach as "authoritarian."
"I see Sussan doing incredible things, given the circumstances that she’s been having to deal with. I think what the party’s struggling with is the style of leadership that Sussan brings," Buchholz said after a Canberra party event.
"Don’t mistake her feminine politeness for weakness. We have come from a previous leadership style of authoritarian [under Dutton] to now a consultative, and some people mistake that, but there are just different styles of leadership."
Upon learning of Victorian Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson’s remarks about Ley, Buchholz described Henderson’s comments as "career-limiting."
Buchholz acknowledged the party was still processing the aftermath of the May election defeat and said healing would take time.
"The party was going through a period of grief after the election defeat in May, and needed time to heal."
