Three people died in a light plane crash at Shellharbour Airport on Saturday, October 11.
"In all my time as a police officer I've never been to an aviation incident like this."
The incident occurred around 10am when the Piper Cherokee Lance aircraft took off and crashed, catching fire, after reaching about 30 metres in the air.
Chief Inspector Aaron Wunderlich of the Lake Illawarra police district described the incident as a "very tragic" event.
