James Overy, a promising 17-year-old defender from Manchester United's academy, has been called up to join Australia's squad for the upcoming international friendlies against Colombia and Venezuela.
Coach Tony Popovic has selected Overy among several new faces as he looks to expand the team's depth in preparation for the 2026 World Cup in North America. The squad announcement also marks the return of key midfielders Jackson Irvine and Riley McGree, both of whom are back from injury.
“We’re focused on building a strong and competitive lineup ahead of the 2026 World Cup,”
said Popovic when introducing the 26-man roster, which includes seven uncapped players.
Overy, who joined Manchester United’s academy last year, has yet to make an appearance for the senior team. His standout performance for Australia’s under-20 World Cup squad, however, helped cement his reputation as one of the nation’s top defensive prospects.
Veteran winger Craig Goodwin also rejoins the squad after a seven-month absence, following his return to Adelaide City in the A-League.
Teen defender James Overy’s inclusion in Australia’s friendlies symbolizes a strategic push by coach Tony Popovic to blend emerging talent with experienced players ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
