Manchester United prospect James Overy has been called up to Australia's squad for upcoming friendlies against Colombia and Venezuela. Coach Tony Popovic also welcomed back midfielders Jackson Irvine and Riley McGree from injury.
The 17-year-old full back, who joined Manchester United's academy last year, has yet to make his senior debut but participated in Australia’s recent under-20 World Cup campaign. Born in Perth, Overy is one of seven uncapped players named in the 26-man squad announced on Friday.
Popovic is focusing on strengthening the team during the second-last international window before the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Germany-based Jackson Irvine returns to the squad for the first time in eight months following foot surgery and a recent quadriceps injury.
These players will compete for their first international caps in the matches against Venezuela on November 14 in Houston and World Cup-qualified Colombia on November 18 in New York.
Author’s summary: Popovic integrates promising young players with returning veterans in a strategic squad build ahead of Australia's 2026 World Cup campaign.
