Sussan Ley has remained silent regarding criticism of her leadership, asserting that the Liberal Party remains “united” despite claims from a backbencher that she is losing support within the party room.
Amid ongoing speculation about her fitness to lead the Coalition, Ley has broken her silence without directly addressing doubts. This follows months of internal conflicts within the Coalition that have challenged Ms. Ley’s position.
The Liberals are expected next week to settle disputes over a divisive emissions target and finalize an energy policy platform, issues that have sparked significant tension within the party.
Senator Sarah Henderson, a Liberal backbencher, expressed hesitation in endorsing Ms. Ley during an interview on Friday morning. When asked directly if she supported Ley’s leadership, Henderson paused before stating:
“I am just going to say at the moment that I cannot support the way things are.”
In Canberra, Ms. Ley declined to comment on her leadership speculation, emphasizing:
“I value every single member of my team, including (Senator Henderson). In order to interrogate her views, you should probably ask her, I’m not commenting on commentary.”
She also reiterated that the Liberal Party remains “united through its values.”
Sussan Ley maintains the party's unity despite leadership doubts, focusing on shared values while internal divisions over policy persist.
