Florida’s 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux made his highly anticipated debut against North Florida, becoming the tallest player in college basketball history.
With UF leading 104-64 late in the game, the crowd of 10,065 at the O’Connell Center began chanting “Oli, Oli, Oli,” celebrating the world’s tallest teenager and fan favorite, even though he had not played professionally since arriving in summer 2024.
“It felt great. The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful,” said the 19-year-old Canadian.
Although Rioux did not score or record a rebound, he surpassed 7-foot-7 Kenny George, who played at UNC Asheville from 2006 to 2008, to become the tallest player to appear in a college basketball game.
“It’s another day, I guess,” Rioux noted, remaining humble despite his campus-wide popularity and constant requests for photos and autographs.
Rioux’s teammates were thrilled to see him get his opportunity. His close friend Micah Handlogten, standing 7-foot-1, jokingly admitted he feels small next to Rioux.
“So much fun. When he was checking into the game, I kind of stopped him and I was like, ‘Play with confidence,’” Handlogten recalled.
Author’s summary: Olivier Rioux’s debut as the tallest player in college basketball marks a historic and celebrated milestone for UF, inspiring teammates and fans alike.
