Spot Guide: Dugi Otok - the Best Spots for Windsurfing and Wingfoiling

Croatia's longest island, Dugi Otok, offers windsurfers six different locations with a mix of flat water and waves. Our detailed guide reveals the top spots for your next adventure.

Meeting the Local Gardener

“Okay, 8.30 tomorrow morning,” we agree one evening with an elderly local gardener near the harbour. He is cutting a tail and promises to pick us up the next day to drive us to Sakarun, located on the other side of the mountain. True to his word, he arrives punctually.

“Nema problema” - no problem: “Everything in there, then just leave the tailgate open.”

Though surprised by the amount of surfing equipment we bring, he quickly accepts the challenge. My admiration for the island’s gardeners grows, along with my excitement for the strong wind session ahead. We are relieved when all the gear fits into his car, and we set off towards Sakarun with the boot open.

Journey and Preparation

Reaching this spot was a challenge, and all we wanted was to get on the water. By this time, we had already been sailing along Croatia’s coast for about a week. A few days earlier, a strong southerly wind was forecast, raising the question of where to surf next.

Choosing the Surfing Spot

With over 1,200 islands and more than 6,000 kilometres of coastline, deciding where to surf took considerable time. We spent hours discussing, studying nautical charts, and checking the weather forecasts to find the best windsurfing conditions.

Author’s summary: Dugi Otok’s unique mix of windsurfing spots and welcoming locals makes it a prime destination for those chasing strong winds and perfect waves in Croatia.
