Paul Kelly celebrates turning seventy alongside the release of his new album, also titled "Seventy." The veteran Australian singer-songwriter spoke with The 13th Floor’s Marty Duda about reaching this milestone and what lies ahead.
Marty: The album is Seventy, you are 70, and believe it or not, I’m 70 too. So I’m curious to hear your thoughts because it seems to be a major thing, doesn’t it?
Marty noted that he had never been one to focus on his age, yet turning seventy suddenly changes how people treat you. Reflecting on age, he recalled that some birthdays had felt especially significant.
Marty: I remember three big birthdays. Forty felt like a real milestone—like, okay, now I’m truly an adult. But it was also when people I grew up with, worked with, or was close to started dying. That happens in the music business because, quite often, some of us die young. It feels like a clear division—some of us keep living, and some of us don’t.
Through his words, Marty captured how age brings both gratitude and awareness of loss. The conversation with Paul Kelly mirrors this sentiment—acknowledging time’s passage while continuing to celebrate creativity and connection through music.
Paul Kelly’s 70th birthday coincides with a new album and reflections on life, aging, and endurance in a world where music and memory deeply intertwine.
