“TODAY” co-anchor Craig Melvin recently visited his hometown, Columbia, South Carolina, to film a special segment celebrating his roots. Reflecting on his childhood, Melvin emotionally recalled walking down the stairs of his preschool and entering the very classroom where he first learned to read.
“Columbia is just such a warm hug for me every time I go back,” Melvin said.
During his visit, Melvin stopped at several beloved local spots: he ate at Lizard’s Thicket, purchased artwork from Ernest “The Chicken Man” Lee, and revisited his old barbershop. These moments brought back cherished memories of the people and places he treasures in the Midlands.
Almost a year after succeeding Hoda Kotb on the TODAY show, Melvin described the shift to co-anchor as an immense increase in responsibility. The fast pace of 2025 has required him to adapt quickly to a demanding schedule.
“You don't just host the show, you're not just one of the pieces of the show,” he said.
Melvin’s return to Columbia not only reconnected him with his past but also provided a reflective pause during a transformative year in his career.
