David Lammy forgets Remembrance symbol as he fills in for Starmer

David Lammy Forgets Remembrance Symbol While Filling in for Starmer

Justice Secretary David Lammy stepped in for Keir Starmer during Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons and began the session with a solemn tribute to those who fought to defend freedom.

Despite this, it quickly became apparent that Mr. Lammy was not wearing a poppy, a symbol widely worn by MPs ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

About 15 minutes into the session, Cabinet colleague Bridget Phillipson handed him a poppy pin to wear.

Explanation and Reactions

When answering a question from Tory MP Bob Blackman, Mr. Lammy explained his oversight by saying he had bought a new suit that morning.

"I bought a new suit this morning because my Godmother said she would be watching," he told the Commons.

He also expressed gratitude to Ms. Phillipson for helping him display the poppy despite his new attire.

"I am very grateful to Bridget Phillipson for ensuring that despite wearing a new suit I have managed to put my poppy on."

Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake condemned the incident, calling it "a disgrace" that Mr. Lammy stood in for Sir Keir Starmer without wearing a poppy.
