LeBron James's return to the 2025–26 NBA season seems to be approaching. The Lakers' superstar has missed the start of his 23rd NBA season due to sciatica but is aiming for a mid-November comeback.
Three weeks ago, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported that the Lakers targeted mid-November for James’s return. This timeline remains unchanged as the team prepares for a five-game road trip following their home game against the Spurs.
“I was told today that Lakers personnel are still operating under the belief LeBron James’s debut will be around mid-November,” Charania said on ESPN NBA Countdown.
Considering James will turn 41 next month and is entering his 23rd NBA season, this situation is unprecedented. General Manager Rob Pelinka's offseason signings—Jake LaRavia, Deandre Ayton, and Marcus Smart—have provided crucial depth in LeBron’s absence.
The Lakers have started the season 6–2 without James, bolstered by the impressive performances of Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. Dončić is averaging 41.3 points per game in four contests, while Reaves has put up 31.1 points over seven games.
The next phase for LeBron’s recovery involves resuming five-on-five live play. Charania also noted that James will not travel with the team during this period.
“But this is uncharted territory. He turns 41 next month, he’s in his 23rd record NBA season and that’s why Rob Pelinka’s three signings this offseason have been so important paying dividends with the depth without one of the best players of all time in LeBron James.”
LeBron's progress remains closely monitored as the Lakers rely on their depth to maintain a strong start to the season.
LeBron James targets a mid-November return after dealing with sciatica, while the Lakers thrive on strong performances from Dončić and Reaves during his absence.
