Australia’s Matthew Short highlights the difficulty of facing Varun Chakravarthy due to his pace and variations, making the spinner unpredictable as teams prepare for subcontinental spin conditions ahead of the T20 World Cup.
In the ongoing T20I series, Varun has taken four wickets across two innings, playing a significant role in India’s pursuit of a series win in Australia. The hosts are working hard to counter his spin before the upcoming World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
“What makes it harder is just how quick he bowls,” said Short on the eve of the fourth T20I at Carrara, Gold Coast. “We’ve obviously watched a lot of footage and whatnot. But yeah, that’s probably going to be the other challenge heading to India if it is spinning or in Sri Lanka as well.”
Short acknowledges that Australian conditions offer less spin compared to the subcontinent, adding: “He’s a tough one and one we’ll have to look out for.”
As Australia finalises their squad for the T20 World Cup, the top-order batter views facing world-class Indian bowlers as a valuable experience, while noting that the tournament conditions will differ greatly.
“There are always ways to improve,” Short said, emphasizing continuous growth despite current challenges.
