Minister Praises Niger Delta Ferry Services Initiative

The Minister of Regional Development (MRD), Engr. Abubakar Momoh, has commended the Niger Delta Ferry Services (NDFS) project as a major step toward improving water transportation infrastructure and fostering socio-economic growth in the region.

Inauguration of Project Development Committee

Engr. Momoh made these remarks during the inauguration of the Project Development Committee for the proposed NDFS, which is planned to operate under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The ministry’s Head of Information and Public Relations, Sani Datti, confirmed this event took place on Wednesday in Abuja.

Addressing Past Neglect of Ferry Transport

Upon taking office, Momoh identified significant neglect of ferry services in the Niger Delta as a pressing issue. He highlighted that in the 2022 Council on the Niger Delta held in Uyo, various stakeholders—including governors, traditional rulers, and youth representatives—called for ferry services to improve connectivity between remote communities.

Historical Importance of Ferry Transport

Momoh emphasized that before Nigeria’s road networks were developed, ferry transport was the primary means of movement within the Niger Delta, underscoring its critical role in regional mobility.

“Before the development of Nigeria’s road networks, ferry transport was the main means of movement in the Niger Delta.”
