Parade and party as Wren says emotional goodbye to wartime colleagues

Emotional Goodbye to Wartime Colleagues

According to Wren Kathleen Oates, victory and the end of the war did not mean everything would be easy.

Kathleen Oates was stationed on the Isle of Man from 1944, writing dozens of letters about life and operations at Ronaldsway.

Her daughter, Christine Smith, explores these letters in a series of columns based on Kathleen's wartime experiences.

Eighty years ago, Leading Wren Kathleen Oates was emotional as she said goodbye to her wartime colleagues, but still enjoyed the island's Thanksgiving Week, celebrated from October 27 to November 3.

The timing differed from its equivalent on the mainland, which began on September 15, 1945.

This date echoed the height of 1943's Battle of Britain.

Author's summary: Wren Kathleen Oates says goodbye to colleagues.
